friday

finally - the end is in sight. it's friday morning of the first week of school. okay, so school started wednesday so it's only been a partial week, but it's been hard. i tell you i may be burned out already. teaching is hard. the hardest part is the self talk you have to do daily to not let yourself get overwhelmed by all the expectations of others (but mostly yourself) and the heat. yes, my building is a/c-less. my good friend from my last job brought by a fan on wednesday afternoon - nearly brought tears to my eyes! i really just want to sleep. in fact, this morning i was going to give myself an extra half hour since i have first period prep and the normal bus get's me here about half an hour early - but then my body just woke up - earlier actually than normal. so i tried to fall asleep, but then finally just got up at the normal time and came into work and have been catching up on blogs and stuff. yesterday in our boxes someone put an article about how info-mania (constant emailing and cell phone use) causes us to be more distracted and less productive then the use of marijuana. i think it said it drops our iq by 10 points. sigh. like i need one more thing in my life to feel bad about. the good news is that the iq drop is more significant in men than women.

Two things, Sarah. First, there's just as much data out there to support the idea that media can be good for us, so...take that for what it's worth.

Second, I too am feeling overwhelmed and burned out...I actually had to write in the margins of my notes this morning "STOP" because of all the negative self-talk I was doing. I didn't really stop, but at least I was aware of what I was doing. Hope your weekend is restful...

CONGRATULATIONS of your first week. I drove by the WX on Tuesday and thought of you... hope next week goes better. You and Julie and excellent teachers. I've admired you both for that... and I love you both for that!! So NO negative self-talk.

Yes, Kudos to the teachers! I think back and am grateful to certain teachers I had that had a positive impact on me and instilled me with a love for learning, and I'm grateful;
And what's with all the negative talk? I grapple with that, too; I sometimes forget to "Remember"... but rather than just avoid or stop the negative talk, I try to center myself more with positivity: think back to Anita's class!
